Amazonian
Expedition - VENEZUELA |
| |
The
world's tallest waterfall cascades more than 3,000 feet from
a rock mesa in southeast Venezuela. The tepuis, giant plateaus
in the clouds, are just one of the wonders of Venezuela, a country
containing everything from Caribbean reefs to Amazon forests. |
| |
In
the southeast, Canaima National Park, one of the largest national
parks in the world, is the site of Angel Falls and other tepuis,
atop which live 96 bird species, including 29 found nowhere
else in the world. In Canaima National Park, a last refuge for
the Pemón people, the human population has grown from 1,600
in 1937 to 10,000 in 1992. Game species and fish have disappeared
from areas close to Pemón villages, as has adequate land for
agriculture, creating tension over the use of park resources.
Additionally, government-led development projects have not included
measures to address the mitigation of environmental and social
impacts. |
